Thriving Kids Program: What Families Need to Know

🌱 Thriving Kids Program: What Families Need to Know

There’s been a lot of talk (and worry) about changes to the NDIS, with the new Thriving Kids program set to begin from July 2026. It’s completely normal to feel anxious about what this might mean — especially for families of children with autism or developmental delay.

But here’s the most important message right now: don’t panic.

What’s Happening

  • The government is planning to shift some children with mild to moderate developmental needs into a new system called Thriving Kids.

  • The idea is that these children will access support through schools, community services, and health providers, rather than through individual NDIS plans.

  • If your child already has an NDIS plan, they will remain supported, and the transition will not be overnight.

Why It Feels Unsettling

Change is hard, especially when it comes to something as vital as support for our kids. Headlines can make it sound like families will suddenly be left with nothing — and that fear is real.

But it’s also important to remember that:

  • The rollout won’t be complete until mid-2027.

  • More details and guidelines will come out before anything changes for families.

  • Advocacy groups are already working hard to make sure families’ voices are heard.

What You Can Do Now

  1. Stay Connected: Keep in touch with your support network — whether that’s your provider, therapists, or organisations like the Benevolent Society.

  2. Ask Questions: Don’t be afraid to reach out to your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or support organisations for clarity.

  3. Document Needs: Keep records of your child’s progress, therapies, and supports — this will help during any transition.

  4. Wait for Official Updates: Policies are still being shaped, so avoid making stressful changes until the government provides more detail.

A Gentle Reminder

You’re not alone in this. Many families are feeling the same anxiety, and it’s okay to sit with those feelings. But there’s also strength in numbers — your community, providers, and advocacy groups will be walking this road alongside you.

At Sensory Planet, our role won’t change: we’re here to support families with tools, resources, and encouragement.
